- Description
- This paper reveals regional diversity in Brazilian modern architecture and aims to expand the exploration of the ways in which regionalism has been, and is continuing to be, defined and redefined. What are regional architectural features and how are they characterised? Regions are defined through their particular architecture, and the architectural character defining regional spaces, in turn, shapes, retains and enhances social identity (Abel, 1997). Most previous studies sought to identify the architects and theorists involved in the making of the modern cultural identity of Brazil, and the mechanisms which created such identity in architecture. This paper now asks the question: Are there any examples of regional identity in modern architecture in the postcolonial, Brazilian context, and how is such local character expressed?
